How to Measure

INFORMATION

How to Measure

Measuring for your new garage door is actually a very simple process.

Use a tape measure to measure the Garage Door’s opening from side to side near the floor of the garage. Measuring large dimensions of a Garage Door can be very tricky for one person. Ask a friend to help you hold one end of the measuring tape. Record this first measurement and all subsequent measurements on a piece of paper.

Measure the door’s opening from side to side again, this time near the topmost part of the Garage opening. Measuring both top and bottom width-wise dimensions will let you know if the door warped—if you get two differing dimensions at each point, then your door’s opening is slanted or bent, and you should hire a contractor to fix the problem.

How to measure garage doors

Stand on a stepladder and measure the Garage Door’s opening from top to bottom. For this measurement, you can take advantage of gravity, letting the tape measure fall to the ground for easy measurement. However, you’ll still want a friend handy to hold the stepladder for safety purposes. With this lengthwise measurement and your previous width-wise measurements, you’ll know how large the opening is for vehicle and door replacement purposes. However, additional measurements are also useful.

Once you have worked out the area, the gap now needs to be reduced to allow for opening clearances. These are as follows:

Reduce Width by 15mm – allows 5mm per side and also 5mm for centre.
Reduce Height by 20mm  – allows 5mm at top and 15mm at bottom.

WITH NEW REBATED FRAME

If you are putting in a new rebated frame purchased from us, take opening between walls and reduce width by 105mm.

For height, take total height and reduce by 65mm (44mm frame, 5mm top and 15mm bottom clearance.

This will be your garage door width.

Estimated delivery time: Monday 4th November to Friday 8th November. (Additional 5 - 10 working days if paint/ stain is added.)

MADE IN THE UK

Expertly Crafted by Hand

All of our garage doors are expertly crafted by hand in the UK using time served construction techniques. Unlike others, we do not pin our garage doors together. We use a traditional framing method. Mortise and tenon joints, along with dowels, are a traditional woodworking technique that provide strong and durable connections between frame members. Combining these joints in a wooden frame enhances stability and longevity. When it comes to securing the cladding to the frame, we only use stainless steel screws. Standard screws will rust leading to the gate's structure to fail over time. Hardwood is a lot more of a stable timber compared to softwood but will expand and shrink during different stages throughout the year. This is completely normal. To protect this, we rebate the inner legs of the gate. This allows the cladding to expand and contract without causing any damage to the frame and without it being noticeable.

Finish is in the detail. Routered detailing to the edges of the door, creating a more polished and refined appearance. This decorative touch enhances the overall visual appeal of the door, making it stand out as a well-crafted and finished piece.

We welcome and encourage our customers to come and visit our factory and see gates being produced for themselves.
