Important Information

Assembly of garden pergolas is relatively straightforward but should only be undertaken by competent, experienced or professional installers. Pergolas contain heavy timber components and require correct installation to ensure stability and resistance to outdoor conditions. Improper assembly increases the risk of structural failure. We recommend getting everything aligned properly and pre-drilling any screw holes before final assembly to ensure easier assembly and avoid splitting the timber. If you are unsure about any aspect of installation, seek professional advice before proceeding.

How to Measure Your Pergola Correctly

Getting your pergola measurements right is key to ensuring a perfect fit for your space. Use the guide above to understand how each dimension is calculated:

  • Width
The width is the length of the rafters that run from one side of the pergola to the other (measured end-to-end). This is the front-facing span of the pergola and includes any ‘overhang’ of the rafters which extend beyond the outside edges of pergola posts and refers to the widest part of the pergola.
  • Length
The length is the length of the side-rails that run along each side of the pergola (measured end-to-end). This is typically the side-facing span of the pergola and includes any ‘overhang’ of the side-rails which extend beyond the outside edges of pergola posts and refers to longest part of the pergola.
  • Height
The height is taken from the ground level to the highest point of the pergola and refers to the highest point on the pergola.

For the most accurate results, always measure your available space carefully and allow for any surrounding features such as walls, fences, or posts.

Which Timber is Best for Your Pergola?

Choosing the right timber for your pergola is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. At Gates & Fences UK, we offer three premium options – Brown Treated Softwood Pine or Hardwood Iroko – each with its own unique benefits depending on your budget, style, and long-term goals.

Softwood Treated Pine

Brown Treated Pine – Cost-Effective & Versatile

Treated softwood pine is a popular choice for those looking for a durable and affordable pergola. Pressure-treated to protect against rot, decay, and insect attack, it offers excellent longevity when properly maintained.

✔ Most budget-friendly option

✔ Smooth finish, ideal for painting or staining

✔ Pressure-treated for outdoor durability

✔ Great for modern or painted garden designs

Best for: Customers wanting a strong, reliable pergola at a lower price point with flexibility in finish.

Hardwood Iroko

Hardwood Iroko – Low Maintenance Luxury

Iroko is a high-performance hardwood often compared to teak, offering a rich, golden-brown finish and excellent durability. It’s naturally oily, meaning it requires very little maintenance and performs exceptionally well in all weather conditions.

✔ Highly durable and weather-resistant

✔ Low maintenance – no treatment required

✔ Rich colour that can be left to weather or maintained

✔ Ideal for contemporary, high-end garden designs

Best for: Customers looking for a premium, low-maintenance pergola with a modern, luxury finish.
