Which Driveway Gate Material is Best?

They all have their pro’s and con’s.

If you are looking for a cost effective set of gates then you can’t beat “Wooden Driveway Gates” constructed from slow grown, Redwood Pine. Being softwood there are characteristics within the timber such as knots and shakes. A lot of customers like the look of knots being visible – especially if applying a stained finish to it. Being timber, we recommend staining/ painting at twice a year. Being a natural product (and even more so if not correctly maintained) the timber can swell and shrink during the seasons. This is taken into account during the manufacture process and hidden gaps are within the gate to allow for the movement.

Slightly more expensive is our “Hardwood Driveway Gates“. Constructed using the finest Iroko timber. When oiled, produces a stunning mix of deep reds that really enhances the look. For those who don’t like knotty timber, hardwood gates are the way to go. Cost wise, being hardwood, is increased. Durability is increased (compared to softwood) as the timber is a lot denser. Expected life is 15+ years. Maintenance (re-oiled or painted) should be carried out at least once a year. To keep your gate looking like new, we would recommend doing this twice a year. Less prone to swelling and shrinkage due to the density level.

If you’re looking for a more traditional design of gate then “Metal Driveway Gates” are for you. Mid range priced, ideal for those in windy areas and easy to maintain. As standard these come with a base finish. For added durability we would recommend having our “long life” paint system added. These are sand blasted (from bare metal) and a zinc undercoat primer coat to prevent rust. We recommend inspecting the metal throughout the year and touch up any areas which have been scratched or chipped to prevent flaking/ rusting.

Going into our higher priced range is our “Metal Framed” range. Select between “Timber Infill” or our eco-friendly “Composite” gates. Deep metal frame provides a sturdy and secure gate for both. Although we have designs to eliminate “sail” effect – if you live on an exposed hill or coast line with high winds this may not be the material choice for you. For ease of maintenance, we would recommend composite infill. Never needs painting or staining and it’s very eco-friendly.

Summary:

How Long do they Last?

If looked after correctly, a wooden driveway gate can easily last 10+ years. Hardwood driveway gates will last 15+ with metal, metal framed and composite closer to 20.

However, this is ensuring care and maintenance is carried out on a regular basis.

Can they be Automated?

Yes, each type can have added automation.

If purchasing a wooden or hardwood driveway gate we recommend above ground automation. This is where the automation arms are connected to the centre brace of the gate. A stronger centre brace is added to the gate to allow for the forces the automation produces.

For metal driveway or metal framed we recommend an underground automation system.

For more details, select a gate design and see the info in the “automation” area.

Do you have a Showroom?

We are a manufacturer so do not have a showroom as such. However, we do welcome customers to come and visit the factory where they can see many gates during the different manufacturing process. At anyone time we have approx 50 sets of gates that are either being made, being painted or being wrapped for delivery.

Is it Nationwide Delivery?

We cover the whole of the UK (mainland only). For larger gates a two man delivery service is provided either by one of our own team or using our selected courier partner.

If you live in Jersey, Isle of Wigth etc. we are able to deliver to a selected port. Please call us for more details.

Exposed Areas (hillside, on the coast) with High Winds

Live in an area prone to extremely strong winds? This can cause issues with some of our driveway gate designs as they can cause a “sail” effect especially if wanting the gate height at 6ft. You could still have a wooden driveway gate – designs such as the Baywood, Torbay and Hinchleywood will work.

Most customers would opt for one of our “Metal Driveway Gates“. Being open designs allows the wind to go through without causing any issues. Looking for modern design? Try the “Harrogate” or “Westgate“.

COMPOSITE DRIVEWAY GATES

Eco friendly, composite driveway gates manufactured using 60% bamboo (100% FSC) and 40% recycled high density polyethylene, environmentally gentle bonding agent, additives and tint. Saving these materials from landfill, giving them value and recycling them into a long life product, provides a harmonious solution to sustainable living. Composite driveway gates produce a long lasting, durable and extremely low maintenance type of gate.
