Measuring for your new gate is actually a very simple process.
If existing posts/ pillars are in place, take three horizontal measurements. Top, middle and bottom as shown below.
Make a note of the SMALLEST width.
** If you are replacing the posts, take a measurement of the whole opening width and reduce size by the width of the posts. For example: Opening width of 3m 460mm minus 2x posts (at 100mm wide each) = 3m 260mm.
Next, decide how the gate will hang and reduce width accordingly. The is by far the most popular option. Gate hinges are mounted to the rear of post. A gap of 15mm between edge of gap and post (each side) and a centre gap of 10mm for opening/ closing.
Reduce 40mm off your smallest measurement (from “Step 1”).
If ordering online and exact measurement not offered. Reduce to closest size. Want it exact? No problem, call our team to order – 0800 6124 965.

We ordered a new front gate and side gate from Gates and Fences and are very happy with the results. Good communication throughout to make sure we ordered the correct sizes and the gates arrived swiftly upon accepting the quote. They also recommended a company to help us install the gates including the automation for the main gate.

Stunning driveway gate, perfect match for our home. We fitted ourselves relatively easily as posts were already in the ground. Nice quality timber. Will recommend.

This was made and delivered within the promised timeframe. It’s a lovely, solid, good quality gate, the only slight issue is that there is a chunk out of the wood at the bottom of the right hand side front. Considering the price I’d have expected it to be perfect, however I’ve accepted it as it isn’t too noticeable and I really needed the gate!
