Our selection of wooden driveway gates advertised on this page are constructed from the finest, slow grown Redwood Pine. We have selected this material for the production of our gates due to the durability and strength a slow grown pine has over the usual faster growing pine offered elsewhere. In fact the density level of this timber is not far off that of hardwood.
Why Choose us?
Our wooden driveway gates are manufactured by us in the UK. Unlike others, our frames are constructed using mortise, tenon and dowel joints giving them ultimate protection and strength. All cladding is fitted using hidden, stainless steel screws. This enhances the look of the gate (we’ve all seen gates with screws all over!) and keeps the boards secured. Combine the above with thicker frames and deeper cladding to produce a gate that really does “make an entrance”.
Softwood or Hardwood?
Some of our customers prefer the character look of softwood driveway gates and like knots being visible. This look is enhanced by applying a stain to the driveway gate. Softwood gates can be painted and putting knot primer on the gates first will reduce the knot appearance. Cost wise, using softwood as the material on your driveway gate is a lot cheaper than using hardwood. Average cost of a softwood driveway gate to a hardwood driveway gate is around 60% less.
What is the Life Span on a Wooden Driveway Gate?
Really this is down to the owner. With annual maintenance and care, a wooden driveway gate made using softwood timber will easily last 10+ years. The gate needs to have either a stain or paint prior to being outdoors. We recommend re-applying a finish within the first 6 months then again at least once a year.
Benfits of a Softwood Driveway Gate
A softwood driveway gate offers several practical and aesthetic benefits:
1. Cost-Effectiveness
- Softwoods like pine, are generally less expensive than hardwoods. This makes softwood gates an affordable choice without compromising on durability if treated and maintained properly.
2. Ease of Customisation
- Softwood is relatively easy to work with, which means you can customise the design, dimensions, and finish of the gate to suit your property.
3. Lightweight Design
- Softwoods are typically lighter than hardwoods, which reduces strain on the gate’s hinges and hardware. This makes opening and closing easier and minimizes wear on gate supports.
4. Good Durability (with Proper Treatment)
- When treated with preservatives, softwoods can resist weathering, rot, and insect damage.
5. Eco-Friendly Option
- Softwood trees like pine grow relatively quickly compared to hardwood trees. This makes softwood a more sustainable and eco-friendly option, especially if sourced from responsibly managed forests.
6. Aesthetic Appeal
- Softwoods offer a rustic, natural look that complements many styles of homes and landscaping. They can also be stained or painted in various colours, adding versatility to match your property’s style.
7. Simple Maintenance
- With regular treatments (like staining or sealing every few years), a softwood gate can have a long life. They require less specialised care than some hardwoods, making them a practical choice.
8. Renewability
- Softwoods are relatively easy to refinish or repair. If the gate starts to show signs of aging, it can be sanded down, re-stained, or sealed to refresh its appearance and add years to its lifespan.
With proper care and treatment, a softwood driveway gate can be a durable, stylish, and environmentally friendly addition to your property.
