How to Measure
Measuring for your new gate is actually a very simple process.
If existing posts/ pillars are in place, take three horizontal measurements. Top, middle and bottom as shown below.
Make a note of the SMALLEST width.
** If you are replacing the posts, take a measurement of the whole opening width and reduce size by the width of the posts. For example: Opening width of 3m 460mm minus 2x posts (at 100mm wide each) = 3m 260mm.
Next, decide how the gate will hang and reduce width accordingly. The is by far the most popular option. Gate is hung between pillars/ posts.
Reduce 270mm from lowest measurement (taken from "Step 1").
Mounted to "REAR" of pillars/ posts.
Reduce 10mm from lowest measurement (taken from "Step 1").
If ordering online and exact measurement not offered. Reduce to closest size. Want it exact? No problem, call our team to order -Â 0800 6124 965.
Measuring for Automated Gates:
For above ground automation, rear hung on the back of the posts take the smallest measurement and reduce by 50mm (this will give you the actual gate size to order). For above ground automation, hung in the centre of the posts take the smallest measurement and reduce by 150mm (this will give you the actual gate size to order). For below ground automation, rear hung on the back of the posts take the smallest measurement and plus 20mm (this will give you the actual gate size to order). For below ground automation, rear hung in the centre of the posts take the smallest measurement and reduce by 260mm (this will give you the actual gate size to order).

Calculating gate width with existing pillars or posts in place.
Take THREE measurements between the pillars/ posts. Across the top, middle and bottom. Make a note of the SMALLEST measurement.
There are different reductions to make depending on the farm/ field gate style and how you are going to mount the hinges (either on rear of post or internal face).
Figure 1: This set up is for a double leaf farm/ field gate. As the hinges are mounted to the rear of the post, the only reduction that is required is where the gate meets to open/ close. Gate opens inwards towards property.
Therefore, reduce lowest measurement by 10mm.
Figure 2: This set up is for a single leaf farm/ field gate. As the hinges are mounted to the rear of the post you do not need to reduce any size from your lowest measurement. Gate opens inwards towards property.
Figure 3: This set up is for a double leaf farm/ field gate. The hinges are mounted to the inner face of the posts. This allows the gate to open both ways.
Reduce 270mm (approx. 11″) from your lowest measurement.
Figure 4: This set up is for a single leaf farm/ field gate automated. The hinges are mounted to the inner face of the posts. This allows the gate to open both ways.
Reduce 130mm (approx. 5 1/5″) from your lowest measurement.
The depth, thickness and quality of materials used in the construction of our field gates is a key factor on how the gate will look and perform.
